A beautiful description of the shul of your childhood, including the sounds of the sobbing people, especially the women! I have a similar memory of the old shul in McKeesport, Pa, in the old part of town. Since this was largely a “Hungarian” shul, and my childhood coincided with the late 40s, in later years I thought those sobs might have been related to the stories that the people were just hearing, the letters they were receiving, from survivors of their former towns and villages, their home communities, that were so recently wiped out.
