The Aruch Hashulchan also makes it clear that the common custom to kiss ones hand after touching their t’fillin has no basis in Halacha . We touch the t’fillin at various points in order to avoid hesach hadas.

I think being aware of G_d and his protection and thinking of the special relationship and your duty to mankind is the most important aspect. The mezuzah is more of a physical reminder because humans are forgetful. Trust me, the protection is real. even if only the idea of the mezuzah exist in your head, the mere thought of an imaginary one is sufficient to protect. It’s not the object that matter.
