He asked me \u201cAre you headed north?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded and he followed.<\/p>\n

The two of us, coated in dust –<\/p>\n

left footprints in the ash of pulverized<\/p>\n

humans, computers, desks and towers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We made our way side by side<\/p>\n

through the gray Armageddon surrounding us.<\/p>\n

Had my grandmother\u2019s ashes floated this way<\/p>\n

over someone else, somewhere else<\/p>\n

nearly 60 years earlier?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After a lull, he said<\/p>\n

\u201cI know it\u2019s not the right time\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

A gradual awareness stirred me,<\/p>\n

\u201cbut I may never have a chance again\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

People had just died, burned and jumped,<\/p>\n

\u201cWould you like to have dinner sometime?\u201d<\/p>\n

I was disheveled, dirty, filthy, forlorn,<\/p>\n

feeling as lonely and lost as Lot\u2019s daughters.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The tear on my cheek tasted salty.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It would be laughably effortless<\/p>\n

A far cry from my daily reality<\/p>\n

And no questions to answer, but one.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He was handsome<\/p>\n

And his blue Irish eyes seemed kind.<\/p>\n

He knew nothing about me<\/p>\n

not even my name.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The wonder and loss of this moment<\/p>\n

in this dim drab world, burdened me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The gold cross at his throat glinted<\/p>\n

He asked again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould you like to have dinner sometime?\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said. And that part was true.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m married.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The lie on my tongue tasted salty.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n
