Jewish Action Wins Five Rockower Awards for Journalistic Excellence

Jewish Action won five Simon Rockower Awards for Excellence in Jewish Journalism for work that appeared in 2024. The announcement was made at the recent American Jewish Press Association (AJPA) Conference.

The prestigious Simon Rockower Awards, referred to as the “Jewish Pulitzers,” are sponsored by the AJPA, which holds a journalism competition for leading Jewish magazines and newspapers across the country. The entries are judged by a panel of judges with expertise in journalism, writing/reporting, editing, graphic design and cartooning in both Jewish and non-Jewish media.

Jewish Action has once again distinguished itself as one of the most highly regarded publications serving the Jewish community, winning a total of five prestigious Rockover Awards,” said Dr. Rosalyn Sherman, chair of Jewish Action. “Consistently tackling relevant issues impacting the Orthodox Jewish community, its first-rate editorial and writing staff continues its tradition of exceptional journalism.”

The magazine secured first place in the Excellence in Writing about the War in Israel: Schools and Universities category for “Voices from Campus,” a collection of essays by Gideon Askowitz, Rebecca Massel, Adin Moskowitz, Eitan Fischer and Isaac Ohrenstein revealing what it’s really like being a Jewish college student in the US post–October 7.

Frequent Jewish Action writer Carol Ungar won second place in Excellence in Feature Writing with her article “A Laughing Matter” about the power of humor during difficult times.

Leah Lightman won second place in Excellence in Writing about Women for “The Holiest Work,” an enlightening conversation with Miriam Neumark Shalev of the IDF Chevra Kadisha women’s unit.

The magazine also won honorable mention in two categories: in Excellence in Personality Profiles for Steve Lipman’s “The Eruv Maven: Meet Rabbi Micah Shotkin,” a compelling portrait of America’s go-to eruv builder; and in Excellence in Education Reporting for Tova Cohen’s “How Students Are Responding to Antisemitism,”a poignant look at how Jewish students are confronting antisemitism.
